It may have been a while since I introduced myself. My name is KariAnne, and I’m so happy you are here.
It may have been a while since I introduced myself.
My name is KariAnne, and I’m so happy you are here.
If you’ve read this blog for more than five minutes, you might have discovered a few things about me.
1. I adore red lipstick. It’s perfect for the last-minute Walmart trip. You know. The one where you weren’t planning on running into anyone and then you discover the entire town is there.
2. I love third-day hair disguise known as the messy bun.
3. I wear yoga pants daily to create the impression that I’m athletic and I’m about to attend a cycling class at any minute.
4. I hold the completely unpopular opinion that stirrup pants were amazing.
Overall, I’m kind of happy with my messy bun, yoga pant wearing, third-day hair embracing, red lipstick self.
Me, myself and I would totally be friends.
But in sad, self-discovery news, I recently came to the unfortunate realization….
…that I have this mildly annoying habit.
Curious?
Come take the tour and let’s discuss.
// my kitchen runner //

I hum to myself.
All. The. Time.
And. I. Don’t. Even. Notice.
But I’m me.
I’m the hummer, not the one being inadvertently hummed at.
Do you have a habit like that?
One minute you’re decorating the kitchen island with baskets and pumpkins and white pumpkins and the next minute you’re humming all the verses and the chorus from “Let It Go” from Frozen….
….and you never even noticed you hummed a note.
I never know what I’m going to be humming next.
I’m decorating the back of the couch with pumpkins and leaves and adding fall branches to the family room, when all of a sudden, a song just pops into my head.
It’s like an ear worm and it plays over and over and over again.
Do you know what song was stuck in my head when I was decorating this hutch?
The song in Les Misérables called “Can you hear the people sing?
“When the beating of our hearts echoes the beating of the drums, there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes.”

I am an equal opportunity ear wormer—from Schoolhouse Rock to Dolly Parton to a 2000’s pop hit.
Like this one by Katy Perry.
Eye Of the Tiger
“Cause I am a champion
And you’re gonna hear me roar”
An anthem for the ages.

Or sometimes it’s the theme from The Brady Bunch.
“And this group must somehow form a family
That’s the way we all became the Brady Bunch.”
Totally old school.

Remember the other day when we were all trying to choose a new slipcover for the office?
(total aside: I ended up going with the blue and white stripe.)
I spent the day humming a Mama Cass song.
“You gotta make your own kind of music.
Sing your own kind of song.”

// fall berry branches // fall ficus tree // blue and white rug //
My humming playlist includes Amazing Grace, Journey, Toby Mac, George Strait, random Christmas carols from Scotty McCreery and that song off that vintage Coke Commercial, as in“I’d like to teach the world to sing.”
See what I mean?
I am the most random hummer on the planet.

I can’t help it.
When I’m happy or busy or making something or concentrating or thinking, I hum.
Which is 97.99% of the time.

Thanks to all that humming, the house is completely decorated for fall.
And I’m counting the minutes until it actually feels like fall around here.
You know.
When the sun is shining through the windows and it’s just a little bit crisp and cool and you have to pull out a sweater and make a cup of hot chocolate and watch the leaves falling right outside your window.

But that’s not the end of the fall decorating story.
The other day I was putting pumpkins in the dining room when all of a sudden….
….I heard it.
Humming.
And it wasn’t coming from me.
I turned around and watched as one of the twins walked by carrying a stack of books and papers and a backpack…
…humming to herself as she walked through the kitchen.
The next generation of hummers had arrived.
I literally laughed out loud at the passing of the baton….and thought to myself….
….”You go, little hummer girl.” 🙂
PS I hope this post inspires you with all your fall decorating.
I’m trying to list the sources underneath all the photos, but if I missed something, just let me know.
